So I was also doing some thinking about what makes or breaks sex scenes for me, aside from teh kink or basic grammar/spelling/physical plausibility issues. And I've always known that I have certain "hot button" words, but I started trying to figure out what they were, and listing words that didn't work for me, and since I'm anal-retentive I made this little table, and...well, there you go. I'd love to hear from you about where you agree/disagree with this, and why, and have you add words to the columns...

I'd like to be totally absolutely clear that this is not in any way a definitive list. Most of the "unsexy" words can be sexy in the right context, and sometimes specificity trumps euphemism. I also recognize (having written a wee bit myself) that writing sex scenes is very difficult, and that you only have so many words at your disposal for what your characters are doing/seeing/feeling. It's just that the words on the left tend to hit my buttons more than the words on the right. YMMV. God, even as I re-read this entry, I'm coming up with more. Where is "tied" as opposed to "bound"? Is "spilling" a good sex word? "Suck" should be somewhere in there, but "slurp" definitely goes in one of the columns on the left....where does "struggle" go? How about "sharp"? Or "blunt"? Does "slow" deserve a spot? How about "rapid" or "fast" or "deliberate"? ETA: I wish they made porny magnetic poetry. I would so rock at magnetic smut. ETA II: This whole discussion has sparked a challenge. I couldn't help myself. Tags: thoughts:language, thoughts:nitpicking

I think I would split your 'hot' column into two - half those words I reckon are hot, the others just neutral. Many of your 'neutral' ones are unsexy to me, and your 'unsexy' ones are just as awful as the overly porny/purple ones. Ah, isn't my fussiness great?
A few disagreements: hungry = really hot, no question. One of my particular favourites, now I come to think about it. deliberate = either neutral or hot, if used correctly. 'Deliberately teasing' is definitely really hot! whine, groan = both neutral slurp = unsexy - what are you thinking, wanting to put in on the left?! suck = just neutral, because it's pretty essential and yet not hot by itself. Same as things like 'thrust', wherever you put that, and 'fast' and 'slow'. tied = neutral to hot. spilling = neutral to unsexy. struggle = hot, usually. sharp, blunt = not usually sexual, although if 'sharp' is used sexually, it does tend to be hot.

Slurp is unsexy, you are correct, and I had put it in the correct column...I just have this little problem telling left from right *facepalms* Everyone's buttons are different - you should check out amanuensis1's comments, she has "trigger" words that don't even enter into my thoughts about sex...these are just my own takes on the words. And it seems we agree, if not on the specific column, on the general difference between the generally hot and the generally not... I separated out "unsexy" and "overly porny/purple" just because the second category isn't worse, it's just awful in a different way. They're all pretty bad...though, like I said, I've read and enjoyed sex scenes that use a lot of those words. Good writers can overcome a word and twist it to their own hot purposes, methinks.

Personally, I find the word "belly" very sexy. It's much better than stomach, midsection, or abdomen, although abdomen has its uses. There's something visceral but innocent about it, and one of my more emotional kinks (slow kinks, you could say, as opposed to hot'n'fast) is the innocence of sex. (I'd rather write lovemaking than fucking. But you didn't hear that from me. I'm a pervert, I am, yup, whips and chains and all that good stuff.) Possible ultra-hot uses of the word "belly" include:
He dragged his fingertips through the thin layer of sweat glistening on [his lover's] belly, which strained and shook with each coarse breath.
"Oh, fuck," he breathed as he went limp against the pillow. With lingering disbelief, he slid a hand through the slick, ghostly drops still warm on his belly. [Just to note here, I also prefer "semen" to "come" (or any other spelling). Again, this gets into visceral innocence. Then, I read medical texts for fun.]
Slow, reverent kisses fell in a trail down her sides and across her belly. [Yay, femmeslash!]
As for other parts of the body, there is no sexy word for "anus." "Hole" is the best I've found. "Channel," despite the fact that's what it feels like (don't ask), yanks me out of a nice, hot, tight narrative faster than a pie in the face. I usually want to snigger. When I have no choice, I use "hole." When I do have a choice, I either use implication, generalisation ("body"), or metaphor (something that usually includes the word "flesh" - I didn't say it was good metaphor). I refuse to use the word "core" in a sex scene with regard to the physical body as it makes me think of apples and acne.
Nip is sexy. This only refers to the verb. In most cases, I prefer "nip" to "bite," but they also have different implications.
Cock or prick, never dick. Nob in very rare situations, usually playful ones. Cunt, never pussy, which makes me cringe. If you're going to use a crude term, no sense in shying back.
I would put "impossibly" into the purple category, but I also try to avoid adverbs. Passion has its place (but should be shown, not told), and "sac" sounds better to me than "scrotum" in most situations. Sometimes the sentence demands a longer word. I also prefer "testicles" or "testes" to "balls," which just strikes me as immature. Balls and dick go together, just as cock, scrotum, and testes do.
Spilling, IMO, should be restricted to accidents with the lube. It's too clichéd to be sexy.
Sweet is overused (and makes me wonder how the person knows this without having tasted the area in question), and angry has too many non-sexual connotations to me to be sexy. I get annoyed when somebody "angrily thrusts" into a "sweet" orifice he or she just described as salty, tangy, or musky.
Anyway, that's my... oh. More than two cents here. Sorry! *sheepish grin* Will shut up now.

I added a lot of yours, though not necessarily where you would have put them...LOL, this could be a "make your own list" meme except the table is too much of a PITA to code. Passion's place, is, as you say, in show-not-tell. When the word "passion" is used, I inevitably retch. You don't seem to have the medical-terminology squick I do, either...did you see this? I don't like "spilling" when it refers to "coming" but it can be v. hot in other situations. "Dick" and "balls" I don't really like - they're on the icky side of neutral for me - but they don't ruin a fic, either. And I like "balls" better than any other word for testicles so far. I don't like "sweet" when it refers to actual taste, but a reference, for example, to someone's "sweet young cock" can make me wibble. "Angry" likewise needs to be used well... No amount of "hot" words will save bad writing, after all.

Your post, and the subsequent comments, make an interesting discussion, though obviously personal taste/responses enter into decisions a lot. You want a really boring, overused word that turns me off instantly (partly because of what it says about the writer's attention level)? Try 'ministrations'. Gah. What's 'touch' done, or any other concrete, specific word? (I read a fic once that said 'administrations' and had quite a debate with myself before I read on - not for the skill in word use, obviously.) Something some people have to consider is whether word choice will make an automated alarm go off in a website's system. An example is isiscolo's amusing experience trying to post Before the Cock Crow (cock = cockerel, a quotation from the New Testament) to Fiction Alley. If I want to post my NC17 fics there, I have to consider how little I can get away with doing to bring them down to R rating. Sometimes it doesn't need much. I came here through a link in a friendslist entry. I also click on the LJs of people who make interesting posts in other people's journals. You can get me in talking about language and its use, every time!
